In pesticide and herbicide formulations, the successful incorporation of an active ingredient into an aqueous system depends on more than the active ingredient itself. Neutralization, pH control and salt-form selection can also affect solubility, stability and processing performance.
Monoethanolamine (MEA) can neutralize acidic components, adjust pH and form water-soluble ethanolamine salts. In this article, Dotachem explains its main functions in agrochemical formulations and the key factors to consider when selecting MEA.
What Is Monoethanolamine?
Monoethanolamine, also known as ethanolamine or MEA, is an amino alcohol containing both an amine group and a hydroxyl group. This combination gives it alkaline properties as well as good compatibility with water and many polar formulation components.
MEA is typically supplied as a clear, colourless to pale yellow liquid. Because it is alkaline and hygroscopic, appropriate handling and sealed storage are important.
What Does MEA Do in Agrochemical Formulations?
- Formation of Water-Soluble Salts
Some acidic active ingredients have limited water solubility in their original form. MEA can react with acidic components to form ethanolamine salts, which may improve their suitability for water-based formulations.
This function is particularly relevant to certain herbicide systems. However, the suitability and required amount of MEA depend on the active ingredient, neutralization target and formulation design.
- pH Adjustment and Neutralization
MEA can be used to adjust pH or neutralize acidic components during formulation. Controlled pH can influence active-ingredient solubility, formulation stability and compatibility with other ingredients.
The addition level should be determined through formulation testing. Excess MEA may shift the pH outside the intended range or affect the overall balance of the formulation.
- Formulation Compatibility
Because MEA is miscible with water and compatible with many polar materials, it can be incorporated into various aqueous systems. It may support the preparation of concentrates that must remain uniform during storage and dilution.
MEA does not, however, guarantee stability by itself. Solvents, surfactants, active ingredients and water quality must be evaluated as a complete formulation system.
- Intermediate for Agrochemical Production
In addition to direct formulation functions, MEA can be used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of selected agrochemical ingredients and auxiliaries.
Its role in these processes depends on the required reaction and final product specification, so technical evaluation is necessary before use.
MEA and Surfactants in Agrochemical Systems
MEA and surfactants perform different functions. MEA is mainly used for neutralization, salt formation or pH adjustment, while surfactants support wetting, spreading, emulsification and dispersion.
Depending on the formulation, MEA may be used alongside products such as agricultural emulsifiers to support the overall performance of the agrochemical system. Compatibility should be confirmed through laboratory testing before commercial production.
Monoethanolamine or Triethanolamine?
Both Monoethanolamine (MEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) can neutralize acidic components and adjust pH in selected agrochemical systems, but they are not interchangeable.
MEA has a lower molecular weight and generally provides greater neutralizing capacity per unit mass. TEA has a higher molecular weight and may behave differently in terms of solubility, viscosity and compatibility.
The appropriate choice depends on the active ingredient, required salt form, target pH and overall system compatibility. Laboratory and stability testing should be completed before replacing one alkanolamine with another.
