NP-9 is often used as a starting grade when buyers compare Nonylphenol Ethoxylate products. It is not as oil-soluble as lower EO grades, and not as strongly water-soluble as higher EO grades. Also known as NPE-9 or Nonylphenol Ethoxylate 9, NP-9 is a nonionic surfactant used for emulsification, wetting, detergency and dispersion. For customers who are not sure which NPE grade to test first, NP-9 is often a useful option to check before moving to lower or higher EO grades.
NP-9 vs Other Nonylphenol Ethoxylate Grades
Different NPE grades are not simply “better” or “worse”. They are used for different formulation needs.
Lower EO grades such as NP-4 and NP-6 are usually selected when stronger oil compatibility is needed, especially in oil-rich emulsification systems. NP-9 is closer to the middle of the NPE range, so it is often used for general wetting, cleaning and emulsification work. NP-10 is close to NP-9 in many cleaning and textile applications, while higher EO grades such as NP-15, NP-20, NP-30, NP-40 and NP-50 are more suitable when the formula needs higher water solubility, solubilization or stronger hydrophilic performance.
For this reason, buyers should not choose an NPE grade only by product name. It is better to confirm the application, target HLB range, solubility requirement, cloud point, active content, moisture and compatibility with other formulation ingredients.
