Tallow Amine Ethoxylates in Industrial Cleaning: Functions and Dotachem Grades

Removing machining oil or stubborn process residue is not only a matter of using a stronger cleaner. The cleaning liquid must first spread over the surface, reach the soil and keep detached oil from returning to the material.

Tallow Amine Ethoxylates can support these steps in selected industrial cleaning systems. Their molecular structure combines a fatty amine-derived hydrophobic group with hydrophilic ethylene oxide chains, giving them useful wetting, emulsifying and surface-active properties.

Dotachem offers a series of Tallow Amine Ethoxylate grades from TA-02 to TA-35. The grades differ in ethoxylation level, total amine value and physical form, so they do not behave identically in a cleaning product.

Helping the Cleaner Reach the Surface

Oil and water naturally resist mixing. This can prevent an aqueous cleaner from making complete contact with an oily metal or equipment surface.

Tallow Amine Ethoxylates help reduce this interfacial barrier, allowing the cleaning solution to spread more effectively. Better surface contact gives acids, alkalis and other cleaning ingredients a greater opportunity to act on deposits.

This is relevant in metal cleaning, equipment maintenance and other operations where grease or processing residue covers the surface. The actual wetting result still depends on water quality, temperature and the other surfactants present.

Emulsifying Removed Oil

Once oil has been loosened, it must remain in the cleaning bath long enough to be rinsed or separated. Otherwise, it may collect on the surface again.

Tallow Amine Ethoxylates can help emulsify oily soil and disperse it through the liquid phase. This does not mean that one product will handle every oil equally well. Mineral oil, wax, polishing residue and mixed industrial soils can respond differently to the same cleaner.

For this reason, an industrial cleaning trial should reproduce the real soil, substrate and working temperature rather than test the surfactant only in clean water.

Use in Acidic and Alkaline Cleaners

Selected amine ethoxylates are used in acid cleaning and degreasing systems. In these products, they may contribute to wetting, emulsification, thickening or corrosion-control performance, depending on the grade and formulation.

Some grades may also be considered for alkaline cleaners. Compatibility should be confirmed because pH can influence the behaviour of the amine group and its interaction with other ingredients.

The choice is therefore not simply between an “acid-cleaning grade” and an “alkaline-cleaning grade.” Acid type, concentration, operating temperature, metal surface and required rinse behaviour must be considered together.

How Dotachem TA Grades Differ

Dotachem supplies TA-02, TA-10, TA-12, TA-15, TA-20, TA-30 and TA-35. As the degree of ethoxylation changes, the balance between oil affinity and water compatibility also changes.

The lower-ethoxylated grades in the range are brown liquids with relatively high total amine values. Moving toward TA-30 and TA-35, the products become light-yellow pastes and their total amine values are lower.

These differences affect more than cleaning performance. A liquid grade is generally easier to pump and meter at room temperature, while a paste may require warming before transfer or mixing. Storage temperature and available production equipment should therefore be checked before a grade is selected.

Total amine value is another useful specification, but it should not be treated as an independent measure of cleaning power. Moisture, colour, physical form and application compatibility also need to be reviewed.

Choosing a Starting Grade

A useful discussion with a supplier begins with the cleaning problem rather than the grade number. Information about the surface, type of oil or residue, working pH, cleaning temperature and application method can narrow the available options.

The required function also matters. A customer looking mainly for fast wetting may not need the same grade as one trying to stabilize an oil-rich bath or develop an acid degreaser.

A laboratory sample can then be assessed for wetting, soil removal, bath stability, rinsing and material compatibility under realistic conditions.

Tallow Amine Ethoxylates from Dotachem

Dotachem supplies Tallow Amine Ethoxylates in TA-02 to TA-35 grades for industrial cleaning, metalworking, textile, leather, coating and other industrial applications.

In addition to Tallow Amine Ethoxylates, Dotachem offers a broader range of amine products for industrial cleaning, surfactant production and other industrial applications.

If you are evaluating a grade for an industrial cleaner, please contact Dotachem with the cleaning medium, operating temperature, target function, required quantity and destination. Product specifications, technical documents and quotation information are available upon request. Free samples are also available for qualified projects, allowing customers to carry out application testing before bulk purchasing.
